How to Set Up and Use Your Blog

1. You may first wish to write your blog post in word and save it for safe keeping, then copy and paste it into your blog.
2. Go to: http://wordpress.com
3. Create a blog. You will be given a password.
4. SAVE YOUR PASSWORD!!!!
5. You will be on your “dashboard” page. Like the dashboard of a car, this dashboard has all your controls for operating your blog. To write a post click on: Write a post.
6. Write the title of your post in the title box, and the body of your post in the body box.
7. Click on: Publish.
8. To see how your post looks, click on: Preview this Post (to the right).
9. To edit your post, go up to the top and click on: manage.
10. Click on: posts (if necessary).
11. Find the post you wish to edit and click on: edit.
12. Now you can edit and re-publish your post.
13. NEVER DELETE THE CATEGORY “UNCATEGORIZED”
14. Your students will have to set up a blog account in order to post on your blog. If you want them to have their own blogs, you can have them give you their blog addresses, so that you can link their blog to yours.

WORKING WITH THE HORIZONTAL MENU BARS:
Top (Primary) Menu Bar:
* Write (post, page, link) * Manage (posts, pages, links, categories) * Design (themes, widgets) * Comments 0 (comments, akismet spam) * Upgrades

Secondary Menu Bar under *Write:
* Post: Here you write a post, which will appear in the main section of your blog. As you write new posts, it will scroll down and be under the new posts. It will eventually move way down until it moves off the screen into the monthly archives. You can keep, edit or delete these, as you wish.
* Page: Here you will write permanent information that does not move off the page. Depending on the way your blog is presented, pages will appear across the top or down the side of your blog. You can keep, edit and delete these, too.
* Link: Here you can add a link to other websites.

* Posts: Here you can edit or delete posts.
* Pages: Here you can edit or delete pages.

Dear Students,

The best way to learn language is to learn it as it is connected to ideas and meaning. Every week I would like for you to work with the ideas and attitudes contained in at least one interview excerpt (preferably one we are working on that week), as well as grammar points and vocabulary phrases you find important in the excerpt. In this way you will learn language as it pertains to these topics. The following template can be copied and pasted into your own document, so that you can fill one out each week, print it, and bring it to class. ALSO, PRINT OUT THE INTERVIEWS THAT WE WILL BE DISCUSSING, AS WELL AS THE ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS AS NEEDED.

What is Culture? What is the Culture of the German-speaking Peoples?

What a huge question! Culture can encompass anything that has to do with human endeavor. In the Humanities we tend to define it as high culture (literature, music, art), as anthropological culture (ways humans live within specific groups/societies), as language, among other things. Take a look at any academic book on „culture,“ and you will see that it is a complex category. How would you like to define it?

Is There One German Language?

First, let me ask you: is there one English language? The answer is no. There are so many varieties and dialects of many languages in the world, that it would make your head spin. Can you imagine learning varieties of Scottish English, British English, Australian English, American English, not to mention the forms of English spoken in other countries? Even within a dialect there are more formal and less formal ways of talking or writing. The same is true of German.

Can Anyone Learn Another Language?

The simple answer: yes. If you’ve learned to listen and speak and carry on a conversation in your native language, you can do so in another. How you do it will determine how fast and if you are successful. (Immersion, education, living with a family, etc.) You can also become literate in another language: read it and write it. Note that becoming literate in your own language did not happen overnight. Indeed, in order to learn to write academic prose, for example, one usually has to go to college.
